William and Lucas are brothers who live in a town in western Canada. Fishing is one of their favorite pastimes and now that it is summer, they can do it more often. One morning, promising their mother that they would bring home a freshly caught dinner, they went out in their rowboat on the river for a day of fishing.
Unfortunately, the day didn't go as planned. William caught a good-sized trout but after that there were barely any nibbles at all. Lucas got excited at a sharp bend in his fishing pole but it turned out to be a very small fish, attached to an underwater plant. It was too small to be eaten. He threw it back in.
Dejected, the brothers rowed back to shore. Once back on land, they began to walk through town to their home. Not far from the river they passed by a small fish market operated by local fishermen. Lucas had an idea. He asked one of the fish sellers, Joe Alexander, to package up three more trout so that the family would have enough fish for their whole family's dinner.
¡§Hey, Joe, can you toss the package to me?¡¨ Lucas asked.
¡§What a show-off, but at least we didn't break our promise to Mom¡¨, William thought to himself.
