Should apes have human rights?
Last month, a committee in the Parliament of Spain voted to support limited rights to the closest biological relatives to human beings-- chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas and orangutans. If the law passes, apes can be held in zoos but their living conditions will have to be upgraded significantly. The law would prevent apes from being captured, used for science experiments or put in circuses.
Chimps have 98% of the same DNA as humans. They are as genetically
close to humans as hrses are to zebras.
Does the idea of treating apes like people seem strange to you or is it the right thing? |
